How often do BMWs need an oil change?

Getting your BMW an oil change

As a BMW owner, you want to make sure you're taking care of your car and keeping it in top shape. Part of that is getting routine oil changes. But how often should you get your oil serviced? And does it differ for different types of cars? We're here to help answer those questions.

How often should I get an oil change?

While you may have checked your car's owner’s manual or asked your local BMW dealership this same question, remember they are in the business of selling cars, not servicing them.

While this varies depending on the type of engine oil, the age and make of your vehicle, and your driving habits, BMW recommends an oil change between 10,000 and 15,000 miles for most vehicles. But at TMJ Bimmers, we recommend every 6,000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first.

Types of oil changes

With motor oil being the most important fluid next to gasoline in your BMW vehicle, it's important that you don't skimp on the quality or type of motor oil you put in your BMW. There are two main types of oil changes: conventional and synthetic. A synthetic oil change service is the more common type and uses high-performance motor oil. Synthetic oil changes use man-made motor oils that are designed to last longer and protect your engine better in extreme temperatures.  A conventional oil change service uses “conventional” oil derived from petroleum. For decades, a conventional oil change was the only oil change option. However, Synthetics use higher-quality base oils as compared to the less-refined base oils used in conventional oils which makes conventional oils less chemically stable. They also oxidize and acidify more easily, break down quicker, and lose their protective qualities as a result.

BMWs require the exclusive use of synthetic motor oils inside all BMW engines (and that goes for most Euros). However, if you're not sure which type of oil is right for your car, you can always ask your local independent BMW Repair Shop for suggestions.

It's extremely important to get routine oil changes to keep your car running smoothly.  This will allow you to avoid expensive repairs and further damage to your car. At TMJ Bimmers, we recommend every 6,000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. Your engine oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle, so waiting too long to change the oil in your car can result in irreparable engine damage that could have easily been avoided.
