Timing Chain Issues & Repairs
At TMJ Bimmers, we recommend replacing your vehicle’s timing chain before failure to avoid additional costly repairs from internal engine damage resulting from a timing chain failure.
If you own a BMW model from any of the BMW 1, 3 or 5 series manufactured between 2007-2011 then it is likely you will have an issue with your timing chain. Although known for its superior engineering, BMWs with the newer N47 motors are known to have timing-chain-wear / engine problems. The positioning of the timing chain remains a fundamental flaw in the engineering design, a major contributing factor to the wear of the chain.
Timing chain issues are usually signaled by the following:
A noise sounding like a rattle or clanking and sometimes accompanied by heavy vibrations coming from the location of the timing belt (the rear of the engine).
Just like any other malfunctioning component of the engine, a faulty timing chain will illuminate the check engine light. It is a warning to get your vehicle assessed for underlying engine problems, which might include a bad timing chain. This is often followed by the car coming to a grinding standstill, requiring a tow truck ride to your local independent repair shop.
Common Timing Chain Issues:
Timing chain systems play a vital role in synchronizing engine components. Over time, these chains and associated components can experience wear and tear, leading to potential issues such as:
1. Chain Stretch: Timing chains can stretch, affecting the engine's timing and causing performance problems.
2. Tensioner and Guide Wear: The timing chain tensioner and guides can wear out, leading to excessive chain slack and possible damage.
3. Noise and Vibration: A rattling or clattering noise from the engine area could indicate timing chain problems.
4. Reduced Performance: Timing chain issues may lead to reduced engine performance, lower fuel efficiency, and even engine misfires.
Preventative Maintenance:
Regular maintenance checks and servicing can mean the difference between a towed car and a good running vehicle. The more miles clocked without servicing, the more susceptible your timing chain is to breaking.
Generally, considering the location of the timing chain, replacing the chain often entails the replacement/servicing of other connected mechanical components. These components usually include the tensioner, the water pump, cam seals and plastic guide rails. However, you shouldn’t wait until your timing chain breaks before you fix it.
Best practice is that once your car has hit a mileage of 40-100K miles, you should have your timing belt replaced. Remember, the slightest disruption to your timing chain could affect your entire car engine. It is possible that the damage to the mechanical parts in the engine may be minimal requiring only a change out of the timing chain with a little servicing, more often this failure causes massive engine damage that may require a complete overhaul of your engine.
In addition to addressing timing chain issues, we also recommend regular preventative maintenance to keep your BMW running smoothly. This includes routine oil changes, inspections, and adhering to recommended service intervals.

1. What are the common symptoms of timing chain issues?
These symptoms often occur slowly as the chain gets longer and more worn out over time so it can be difficult to notice a sudden symptom until the chain is about to give out entirely. It is better to reflect on how your vehicle is currently running today and compare it to how it ran months ago which can be difficult to do. However small problems could indicate that a total failure of the chain is on the horizon. Here are a few things to look out for that might indicate your timing chain is on the way out.
Check engine light illuminates - while this can happen for a variety of reasons, one of those reasons is that the timing chain has given out or it is about to give out.
Rough idle - If it is shaking or vibrating more than normal, it could be that the timing chain is wearing out.
Unusual noises - Especially when idling, but not just when idling, you may hear your engine rattle. If the sound is consistent and rough, then the issue could be that the timing chain is loose and rattling against something else.
Metal shavings in oil - The timing chain will wear out over time and as it is going out, it may leave metal shavings in your engine oil (which can lead to more problems).
Engine failures - If your BMW won’t start, then the chain may be broken and not providing enough pressure to start the engine. If this happens while you're driving then the pistons may get damaged or the serpentine belt could end up doing more damage to your vehicle.
Engine misfires - When a chain is going out, it can cause your engine to misfire. The chain connects the cam and the crankshaft. When it is too stretched out, the chain can cause the vehicle to skip a gear on either the crankshaft or the camshaft.
2. How often should I have my timing chain inspected?
It's recommended to have your timing chain inspected during scheduled maintenance intervals or if you notice any unusual symptoms like rattling noises or poor engine performance. Regular inspections by your trusted local independent repair shop can help identify potential issues early on and prevent costly repairs.
3. What causes timing chain wear and tear?
Timing chain wear and tear in vehicles can be attributed to several factors, including:
Continuous use and high mileage.
Lack of regular maintenance, such as oil changes.
Insufficient lubrication due to using incorrect oil viscosity.
Manufacturing defects or component failures.
4. How long does a timing chain typically last before requiring replacement?
The lifespan of a vehicle’s timing chain varies depending on driving conditions, maintenance practices, and the specific model. This is one of the reasons we strongly recommend to our customers to schedule a Pre Purchase Inspection prior to purchasing any vehicle. In general, timing chains are designed to be durable and can last upwards of 100,000 miles or more with proper maintenance. Prior to purchasing, we strongly recommend you research known timing chain issues with particular BMW engines. For example, timing chain guides are known to fail prematurely on BMW N20 engines made from 2011 to 2015. BMW has even issued a recall on them due to subpar timing chain guides.
5. Can I drive with a faulty timing chain?
Short Answer: NO. Driving your vehicle with a faulty timing chain will lead to severe engine damage, including valve and piston damage. If you suspect timing chain issues or notice any unusual symptoms, it's essential to have your vehicle towed to your local independent repair shop to be inspected by a certified technician immediately to prevent further damage and ensure your safety.
6. How much does it cost to repair or replace the timing chain?
While the cost of repairing or replacing the timing chain in your vehicle varies depending on the specific model, severity of the damage, and labor rates, this is typically not an inexpensive repair. Generally, timing chain repairs can range from a few hundred dollars for minor adjustments to several thousand dollars for a complete replacement.
