Top 5 Auto care tips for Houston Residents

If you're a Houstonian, then you know the drill: hot summers, high humidity, miles and miles of concrete and a whole lot of traffic. Fortunately, there are a few simple things you can do to keep your car running smoothly all year round and especially in this Summer Heat:

Engine Cooling system inspection: Because excessive heat will cause rubber and plastic gaskets, hoses, and belts to harden, crack and even melt, ensure that your vehicle's Engine cooling system is in optimal condition at your next oil service. Have your local trusted automotive shop check the coolant level and quality, inspect hoses and belts for any signs of wear or leaks, and verify that the radiator and cooling fans are functioning properly. If recommended, consider flushing and replacing the coolant.

Air conditioning service: Have your car's air conditioning system checked and serviced if you notice it isn't cooling as quickly or as cold as in the past.  This includes checking the refrigerant level, cleaning or replacing the cabin air filter, and verifying that the compressor is functioning well. A properly functioning A/C system is super important for comfort and safety during dangerously hot temperatures.

Battery inspection:  High temperatures can put an extra strain on your car's battery. Because excessive heat accelerates the onset of battery failure by overextending depleting your battery, have the battery inspected to ensure it is in good condition, with clean terminals and secure connections. Consider having your battery’s performance tested and replacing before it goes out leaving you stranded.

Tire inspection and maintenance: Check the tire pressure regularly, because  excessive heat to cold can cause tires to over or under inflate. Ensure that all tires, including the spare, have adequate tread depth and are free from any visible cracks, excessive wear or damage. Consider having tires rotated and aligning the wheels for optimal performance.

Fluid checks and replacements: Have your local trusted automotive shop verify the levels and condition of essential fluids such as engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, and power steering fluid. Flush and replace any fluids that are dirty or have reached their recommended service intervals.

Exterior care: Protect your vehicle’s paintwork from the sun's harsh rays by regularly parking in covered areas, washing and waxing the vehicle. Consider applying a paint sealant or protective coating to shield against UV damage.

Interior care: Clean and condition the leather or upholstery to maintain its quality, and consider replacing the factory floor mats with WeatherTech floor mats to protect the carpet from dirt and moisture from everyday wear and tear. Keep the interior cool and comfortable by using sun shades or window visors when parked, and consider tinting the windows for additional heat reduction. Ceramic window tint is the pinnacle of modern window protection. It is engineered for superior clarity and blocks 99.9% of UVA/UVB rays. Plus, it actually noticeably keeps the inside of your vehicle cooler. Let us know if you're interested in this upgrade during your next vehicle service.

Vehicle Emergency kit: As part of general preparedness, it’s good to ensure your car has an emergency supply kit that includes items such as a flashlight, jumper cables, tire pressure gauge, first aid supplies, and a spare tire with necessary tools to change the tire. But, you might even consider an inexpensive air compressor, a battery jump box, a quart of your engine’s oil, and a quart of BMW approved coolant.

Regular Oil Service & Maintenance Checks: Follow your BMW's recommended maintenance schedule and stay up to date with routine oil servicing at 6 months or 6,000 miles. Proper maintenance will help identify and address any potential issues before they become major problems.

By following these simple tips, you can keep your car running like new all year long!
